A senior member of Britain’s ruling Conservative Party has said that Prime Minister Theresa May will announce a clear timetable for her resignation in early days of the next month.
Graham Brady, chair of the 1922 Committee which supervises Tory party’s leadership, said on Thursday that May had agreed to announce when she will resign as party leader and prime minister after her fourth attempt to go through the parliament with a European Union withdrawal agreement starting June 3.
“We have agreed that she and I will meet following the second reading of the Bill to agree a timetable for the election of a new leader,” said Brady following a meeting with may.
The Tory official said May’s announcement on resignation process will certainly be made following the debate in the House of Commons on her Brexit deal regardless of what the result of debate vote would be.
May’s government has announced the Commons will be able to start debating the Brexit deal for a fourth time in next month. She has failed for three times to have the deal passed, prompting senior Tory figures to call her to resign. The calls intensified after the Conservatives lost 1,300 councilors in the local elections earlier this month.
May had accepted to announce a timetable on resignation once Brexit deal was ratified. However, Brady said discussions on the timetable will take place whether the bill was passed or not.
Britain’s former foreign minister Boris Johnson said on Thursday that he would certainly run to become next prime minister if May resigns.
Johnson, a former London mayor, has been a main critic of May’s Brexit strategy and resigned from her cabinet in July last year when the premier announced her plans for negotiations with the EU.
